Port Canaveral Signs Auto Facility Lease

Port Canaveral is pulling back the throttle on discussions to build a cargo rail from the port to the mainland, but moving forward on building a future auto terminal facility that would create hundreds of new jobs.

At the Oct. 28 meeting, port commissioners planned to address many factors in its future expansion and business growth plans.

The group was expected to ask for a “temporary pause” of the Surface Transportation Board Office of Environmental Analysis’ review process, which is part of the port’s ongoing discussion on building a rail system that will help transport cargo to the mainland. The rail conversation has hit some rough waterssince proposed railways through environmental areas have gotten push back from the local community.

Another item includes approval to sign a letter of intent for its “Project Roll On-Roll Off” facility on 16 acres of land, which will house a 20,000-square-foot auto terminal facility. Landing an auto terminal facility opens up a new business opportunity for the port as disassembled cars can be shipped by land to the port, assembled at the port and then loaded onto ships to overseas markets.

The port has envisioned a $500 million-plus cargo and cruise expansion aimed at generating billions of new dollars in economic impact and up to 15,000 new jobs. However, some of the endeavors — such as the rail talks — aren’t going as well and have led to major changes at the port, including the agreement that Port Canaveral’s CEO John Walsh will resign on Jan. 21.
