Developers, Brokers Celebrate Big Deals

It’s been a long climb out of the recession, but there was a big “happy dance” for Central Florida real estate professionals recently at the ‘Best of the Best Awards Gala 2016‘, an annual awards ceremony for NAIOP Central Florida, held on March 3.

Amid the inn’s swanky marble hallways, commercial real estate professionals congratulated each other on a year of hot sales in 2015.

Jokes and laughter were easy, the wine flowed and rival firms were subject to good-natured jabs at each other.

“Of course when the market is good, we all like to say it’s because of our great vision,” joked emcee Bill Moss, senior managing director at CBRE in Orlando.

Moss laced his remarks with snark, remarking that a few men from his own firm weren’t wearing ties, and complimenting well-dressed people from JLL.

Lake Nona’s Tavistock Development swept the big awards of the evening, winning for Office Developer, Mixed Use Developer, Special Use (along with Weiland Corp.) and — for the second year — Developer of the Year.

The other development company recognized was McCraney Property Company for industrial park buildings, Bent Oak 1 and 2.

According to NAIOP Central Florida, Tavistock is “responsible for taking 7,000 acres of vacant land and creating residential, retail and office developments, and more notably, a $2 billion high-tech cluster of medical, educational and research institutions. And they continue to have a pipeline of new projects underway.”

Another big winner was CBRE‘s own Robbie McEwan, who handled several big deals in 2015, including the sale of 474 acres near Universal Boulevard to a subsidiary of Universal Parks and Resorts for $130 million. He won first place in the investment land category.
