Well known for his leadership in education and also as a past president at CCIM Institute, Robert “Bob” L. Ward, CCIM, passed away on Dec. 12 at the age of 82 in Oviedo.

His contributions to the Institute were numerous, and his impact on CCIM education is enduring, according to CCIM Institute CEO Walt Clements, CCIM, CRE, FRICS.

Memorial Services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. in the CrossLife Church, 45 West Broadway, Oviedo, Florida.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to: Hospice of the Comforter [www.hospiceofthecomforter.org].

“For almost five decades, Bob was a tireless, generous, and creative force behind the development and delivery of CCIM’s education program,” says Clements, who is also a CCIM senior instructor. “He was instrumental in defining the body of knowledge that is the foundation of CCIM Institute’s highly regarded designation education program.”

As a CCIM senior instructor, Ward taught thousands of students with great passion and dedication. He possessed the unique ability to translate complicated concepts and analyses into actionable, and profitable, outcomes. For example, Ward enjoyed recounting those “Aha!” moments when he would see students connect concepts with application of the material.

CCIM faculty members revered Ward as a mentor. He never turned down a request for assistance or guidance as the curriculum — and his Excel spreadsheets — evolved over the years.  Ward was well known for his spreadsheets. After one of his earliest efforts was introduced to instructors and met with great applause, CCIM Institute education consultant at the time, Richard Green, noted it was the first time he had ever seen mortgage amortization receive a standing ovation, according to Joseph Fisher, CCIM, a friend and fellow CCIM senior instructor.

Ward retired from active teaching of the CCIM Institute designation courses in 2006. Never content to sit idle, he focused his considerable energies and intellect on the development of other CCIM education endeavors.

In 2007, CCIM Institute honored Ward’s contributions by naming the Institute’s non-designation education program as the Robert L. Ward Center for Commercial Real Estate Studies. This honor was bestowed during the inaugural ceremony of 2008 Institute President Tim Hatlestad and co-presented by his friend and fellow CCIM instructor, Fisher, with a proclamation citing his “significant leadership, contribution, commitment and investment in the realization of the CCIM Institute Vision and Mission through countless efforts, extraordinary investments of time, and immeasurable gifts of knowledge.”

“Bob confessed to me that it was one of the rare moments when he was speechless,” Fisher says.

Ward was born June 13, 1933, in Oviedo, where he lived his entire life. His career began in residential real estate before he moved into commercial and investment brokerage. Among his achievements, Ward headed up the income property sales for Merrill Lynch Commercial Services in Orlando, Fla., and became a partner in a shopping center development company, which developed about 15 shopping centers that ranged in size from 60,000 sf to 180,000 sf.

Bob was also the past President of the Orlando Area Board of Realtors® and a past recipient of that Board’s Realtor® of the Year award. He owned his own company, Ward Consulting Services LLC in Oviedo, FL, which specialized in income property brokerage, where Bob was involved in brokerage and consulting.

Based on his work experience in commercial real estate, Ward became a CCIM Institute instructor in 1972 and first taught investment courses and then expanded to teaching nearly every CCIM course available to those commercial real estate professionals earning the CCIM designation.

Ward is survived by his wife of more than 50 years Joanne and five children.
